Fire Safety Order — premises fire duties

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 places fire safety duties on the responsible person for most non-domestic premises in England and Wales.

Summary only — not legal advice. Check the official sources below.

The responsible person must carry out a fire risk assessment and put in place general fire precautions.

Duties cover means of escape, fire-fighting equipment, detection/warning, and training where required.

Amendments after Grenfell strengthened duties on information and for multi-occupied residential buildings — check the latest Home Office / NFCC guidance.

Scotland and Northern Ireland have related but different regimes.
